West Valley swimmer Sayeh Faridnia and Viking aquatics director Willo Rodriguez were named the 2018 WVC Athlete and Coach of the Year at the 2018 Athletics Scarf Ceremony Wednesday night. Faridnia raced to a pair of state titles two weeks ago - her second consecutive 100 butterfly and the 200 butterfly - making her the only three-time state champion in West Valley swimming history. She is a two-time All-American, was undefeated in both the 100 and 200 fly in 2018, and earned Athlete of the Meet and Performance of the Meet at the 2018 Coast Conference Championships. Faridnia has signed to swim with Concordia University in Irvine this fall. Rodriguez coached the 2017 men's water polo team to an undefeated conference and NorCal season and a spot in the state title game against eventual champion Golden West. Along with coach Erika Vargas, he led the women's water polo team to its first-ever undefeated Coast Conference campaign and a runner-up finish in the NorCal finals. He and Vargas also coached Faridnia to her three state championships. The Scarf Ceremony is an annual event celebrating student athlete success in the classroom, in competition and in the community. More than 150 people, including three dozen graduating Viking athletes, attended Wednesday's ceremony held in the West Valley Student Center.
