With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Jason Haug sent an 0-1 pitch into the 3-4 hole to score Steven Grizzle and give the West Valley baseball team a 5-4 walkoff win over crosstown rival De Anza Saturday at Valhalla. Grizzle opened the inning with a walk and moved to third on a Jared Reupert sacrifice bunt and a Danny O'Reilly groundout to second. Haug took a called strike from De Anza reliever Icko Iben and then singled past second baseman Brian Garcia to drive in Grizzle and set off a Viking dogpile celebration behind first. The Vikings (17-17, 10-5 Coast-Golden Gate) spotted the Dons (9-21-1, 4-11) a 1-0 lead in the third before putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Jonathan Teschner provided the big blast with a two-run single that knocked in O'Reilly and Reupert. Jake Pao crossed the plate to make it 3-1 on an Erik Ochoa sacrifice fly. Nate Petrov singled in Teschner to give WVC a 4-2 lead through seven, but De Anza tied it at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Matt Atencio came on in the eighth and struck out five Dons in three innings of work to earn the win. The West Valley defense was superb, recording four double plays, including inning-enders in the 1st, 4th and 6th. O'Reilly finished the day 3-5 with a pair of doubles to lead the Viking offense. The two teams meet again Tuesday (4/16) at De Anza. First pitch is 2:30pm.
