In a game devoid of defense for most of the night, a Devante Johnson stop ignited a 12-5 run and propelled the West Valley men's basketball team to an 88-85 win in the Coast Conference opener at De Anza Friday night. Trailing 80-76 with 5:10 left, Johnson blocked Darien Davis's layup attempt and then drained a three at the other end. DJ canned eight of his game-high 31 points in the final five minutes, and Alphonse Manalo hit a big bucket with just over a minute to play. Jacquez Walker had 15 points and Robert Noland scored 12, while Ajay Singh topped the Dons (8-10, 0-2) with 28. The Vikings (7-10, 1-0 Coast) host Monterey Peninsula (8-10, 2-0) Wednesday (1/16) in the Coast home opener. Tipoff is 7:00pm.
