The West Valley men's soccer team captured its second straight Coast Conference championship in impressive style. The Vikings led the state in goals (84), goals-per-contest (4.00), total points (251) and were eighth in goals-against (17). More impressively, 12 Vikings earned spots on national, regional, conference and team awards lists. Leading the way was SO forward Rodolfo Castro, who was a United Soccer Coaches (USC) 1st-team All-America and All-West Region honoree, the Coast Player of the Year, an All-Coast 1st-teamer and the team's Most Valuable Player and Offensive MVP. Castro led WVC in goals (22), assists (19) and game-winning goals (6) and will attend San Jose St. on scholarship. Gerardo Martinez, a FR defender, was named to the USC All-WEst Region 1st team and was a 2nd team USC All-American. Martinez was named the team's Defensive MVP and recieved a schoalrship to Cal Poly SLO. SO keeper Yannick Lamers was named to the USC All-West Region 2nd team for the second straight season, was the Coast Goalkeeper of the Year and an All-Coast 1st teamer for the second consecutive year. Lamers recorded a 0.73 goals-against-average, a .824 save % and had eight shutouts. He'll attend Drury University (MO) on scholarship. The CSU-Monterey Bay-bound Alexis Rincon was the Coast Midfielder of the Year and was named to the All-Coast 1st team. Joining Rincon on the All-Coast 1st team were FR forward José Canada, SO forward Matthew Korpontinos, who recieved a Sacramento St. scholarship, and SO defender Bo Antonissen, who was named the team's Most Inspirational Player. All-Coast 2nd team honors went to SO midfielder Leo Fernandez, who was the team's Most Improved Player and will attend San Jose St., FR midfielder Francisco Hernandez, SO defender Sam Ludley and SO forward Makenna Pendleton, who will join Rincon at CSU-Monterey Bay. SO defender Alfredo Topete received the team Coaches Award and will attend Loyola Marymount in the fall.
