SAN JOSE -- The Vikings scored 11 runs over the games' final three frames and Amelia Sizemore threw a one-hit shutout as West Valley closed its regular season with an 11-0 victory over San Jose City College on the road. With the victory, the Vikings (35-4, 11-3 Coast) clinched the No. 2 seed in the North, where they will host a postseason series next weekend.
The game was quiet for the first couple innings as the Viking offense settled in. Sizemore, to her credit, worked around a couple of early walks to match 0's thrown up on the other side. In the top of the third, Taylor Hanshaw led off the inning with a single and was bunted to second by Izzy Paskert. Sophomore Mo Temple doubled and Raylene Cruz drove home another to give the Vikings more than enough insurance early on. Still, they added two more in the fourth on back-to-back RBI doubles from Hanshaw and Ella Moser as the Viking lead pushed to four.
San Jose City mustered its only hit in the bottom half of the fourth, as Chevelle Quistian's single found the outfield grass. Sizemore promptly responded by striking out the next batter on four pitches.
West Valley scored seven times in the top half of the fifth, pushing the lead to run-rule territory. The fifth inning was a walk-a-thon, as the Vikings walked four times, twice to bring in runs. Angie Fulkerson, who doubled, and Paskert, who hit her second home run of the season, provided the big blasts in the inning.
As was announced this past weekend, West Valley will now host a best-of-three series at home against Sacramento City. It's a rematch for the Vikings, who opened their season with a 9-0 victory on the road against the Panthers. The two will open their series this Friday at 2:00 PM before playing on Saturday at noon and, if necessary, finishing the series with a third game later that day.
